Bay Meadows
Race track has been an integral part of San Mateo since 1934. It is
a unique San Francisco peninsula landmark and has hosted races with
some of the world’s most famous horses including “Seabiscuit”
and “Citation”. Seabiscuit was owned by local resident
Charles Howard and set multiple records at Bay Meadows.
Bay Meadows is known to have been frequented by many prominent
personalities over its rich history: Bing Crosby, Jimmy Durante,
Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Joe DiMaggio, …to name just a few.
In addition to visiting Bay Meadows for entertainment, many well-known
patrons were also horse owners.
Many firsts were attributed to Bay Meadows. The electric starting
gate, photo finish, and many other innovations were originated by
track operator Bill Kyne at Bay Meadows.
Located mid way on the peninsula between San Jose and San Francisco,
Bay Meadows was a pioneer in the bay area as a public transit recreation
destination with its own rail stop. That public transit model has
been duplicated by today’s PacBell baseball park.
Bay Meadows also has a rich history of contribution to the community.
During World War II, Bay Meadows raised $4 million dollars for the
war effort. Community leaders often turn to Bay Meadows for assistance
with fund-raising efforts. Bay Meadows hosts the annual “Denim
to Diamonds” charity ball for the Ronald McDonald House at
Stanford University which raises nearly one half of the annual operating
budget for the children’s hospital cause. The music auditorium
at Notre Dame school in Belmont was funded by Bay Meadows.
Bay Meadows also hosts numerous community activities, social gatherings,
and corporate events. Events include: company parties and picnics,
high school proms, the City of San Mateo 4th of July fireworks celebration,
the Ray Charles benefit concert to raise funds for a new San Mateo
public library, and many other community events.
