The future of the historic Bay
Meadows racetrack is at stake
Although horseracing
remains very profitable and Bay Area residents want to see the racetrack
remain, Stockbridge Capital, who acquired the land several years ago,
has submitted plans to destroy the historic track.
Should the San Mateo City Council approve the proposal submitted
by Stockbridge Capital and developers Wilson, Meany, and Associates,
the San Francisco Bay Area would lose yet another unique, historic,
and viable entertainment landmark on the peninsula. We would also
lose the many social and philanthropic benefits Bay Meadows provides
to the surrounding communities. The 83 acre historic racetrack,
a peninsula landmark since 1934, would be destroyed and replaced
by a high density complex, including over 1.2 MILLION sq. ft. of
office space. We would lose an important piece of bay area history
and heritage forever.
City, County, and Bay Area residents are strongly opposed to the
proposed development. The Save Bay Meadows
Citizens Group wishes to preserve the historic landmark.
