1) Added Variety of Year Round Entertainment
Horse racing runs approximately 100 days out of the year at Bay
Meadows. Additional uses for the existing structures and property
can make the operation even more profitable to the owners, and even
more of an exciting entertainment destination for surrounding Bay
Area communities.
Suggestions have included a variety of full time entertainment:
live music venues, comedy clubs, dancing, fine dining, theatre/performing
arts, etc. Existing structures would accommodate the current seasonal
horse racing use as well as added full time entertainment use concurrently.
Full time venues could be leased to established, proven successful
operators of those types of venues respectively. Horse racing could
continue and the additional year round entertainment use would compliment
and enhance the seasonal and historic horse racing use.
The established Bay Meadows landmark is one of the original public
transit-oriented destinations in the Bay Area. Bay Meadows is served
by it’s own CalTrain stop, providing people from San Francisco
through the South Bay with unique entertainment – easily accessible
by public transportation.
2) County Purchase and Operation of Bay Meadows
One proposal, calls for the County of San Mateo to purchase the
land, combining Bay Meadows with the adjacent San Mateo County fairgrounds.
The land would be acquired through Certificates of Participation,
allowing income from its lease by the racetrack operation to repay
the debt. The purchase would not require new taxes. Del Mar racetrack
in Southern California is owned and operated successfully by San
Diego County.
The combined land could allow for a much needed and centrally located
cultural/performing arts center and possibly an updated convention
center, providing additional income to the county.
3) Private Purchase
Investors could cumulatively purchase the land and own shares of
Bay Meadows stock. Alternately, Bay Meadows could be purchased through
philanthropic methods, grants/foundations, or by an individual.
